Pontio Arts Centre - Bangor University
Split over six levels, Pontio is Bangor University’s brand new arts and innovation centre.
The Grimshaw designed building in the centre of Bangor is home to a flexible mid-scale theatre named after the world-famous bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. The studio theatre holds up to 120 people, a 200-seater digital cinema, a cutting-edge Innovation Centre and a wide range of facilities for students, including a new home for the Students’ Union and numerous learning and teaching spaces.
DMA Signs were commissioned directly by the University to produce and install a way-finding scheme to run throughout the building that would complement the building’s architecture, while ensuring it delivered clear and practical way-finding functionality for the busy venue that welcomed numerous visitors every day.
We began to understand that the bold architectural design of the building already captured a positive attitude within the town
and the University.
This led us to focus our signage design work around the spaces and uses of Pontio. Being a public space, the building would naturally be home to collisions between the public, university students, and staff, allowing a blend of thinking and creativity to
be passed between groups.
Taking these spaces from the architecture and breaking it into individual elements, we allowed them to move and collide while signifying the idea of the project, creating unique shapes and reducing brandmark into its purest form.
