Discover - Ascent 3, Farnborough (StructureTone Ltd)

DMA Signs worked in collaboration with design architects ‘Gensler’ to deliver high-quality bespoke signage for ‘Discover’s’ new UK corporate headquarters, from high-elevation, exterior illuminated lettering to reception signage, directory listings and way-finding.

The signage project included the design, development, manufacture and installation of:

  • High Level Large LED Illuminated Building Logo

  • Internal Environmental Graphics to key feature walls

  • Bespoke Signage furniture

  • Internal Signage and way-finding elements

  • Custom glass Manifestations

What finally convinced the client DMA Signs were right for the job was the fact that we were able to provide a design solution to erect scaffolding at the top of the building, accompanied by large mechanical plant, in order to complete the crucial high-elevation aspect of the project and negotiate the planning application, in what was traditional a green belt area. This was a hugely complex challenge, as there was no structural support on the building, to which the signage was to be attached. DMA Signs was able to deliver a workable solution to this problem and produced structural calculations and custom internal steel works to support the loading of the large illuminated sign.

The high elevation lettering posed the biggest challenge, due to its sheer scale and requirements for intensive structural requirements to achieve the architect’s vision. The client also required a simple and safe access solution to allow the LED drivers,
to be maintained and replaced, so we produced an IP rated accessible enclosure to the roof area. In addition to this high elevation signage, we delivered a range of interior signage, bespoke signage furniture which mirrored the look a feel of an airport display board and included the design of directory listings, illuminated reception signage and back-decorated glass panels.

The high-level LED illuminated logo was manufactured from folded 3mm aluminium 8700mm x 1800mm x 200mm deep overall and coated to the client corporate Pantone brand colour with internal mild steel support frame with hanging arms and ceiling
plates to suit. Mounted to the face of the sign was a built-up flat faced 3mm aluminium logo, coated white matt inside and corporate brand colours to the outside. The logo was a manufactured with a built-up 3mm aluminium
back tray with welded spacers to suit, with internal halo WHITE 12v/24v LED illumination, 1600mm high 'D' with 100mm deep returns re: 'DISCOVER'.

Peter Christou (Project Surveyor) - Structure Tone Construction.

“I must say I never thought we would be allowed to have this sign on the building. Not only because of the planning issues, but
the fact the building had not internal bracing to hang the signs onto. DMA Signs did an outstanding job, taking full control of the project and finding solutions to every hurdle”.
