RAM Quarter - Wandsworth

RAM Quarter at Wandsworth, is an exciting new residential and retail quarter, combining contemporary living with iconic heritage
at the historic Young’s Brewery Site.

 

DMA Signs Limited were responsible for concept, design, production, manufacture, and installation of all Signage on the project, including the development of prototypes for testing on site prior to full manufacture, and innovational development utilising the
latest in metal paint technology.

 

One of the outstanding features was the requirement for a seamless fusion of glass and metals. For example, the hop mark logo
detail on the totem signs required embossed brass to be stamped through low-iron glass to achieve a signature look to the signage furniture. Our design team relishes complex problems like this, and built prototype models for close-up inspection prior to
manufacture, to satisfy contractor, client and heritage prerequisites.

 

With a bespoke project of this scale, quality was paramount, so one of the biggest challenges was to achieve a consistent finish across all sign types. The Ram Quarter hop mark logo details were finished with a tarnished brass metal effect, a revolutionary process that applies a veneer of a metal coating to the surface of the substrate to give the look and feel of solid metal, and involved hand-finishing, polishing and painting multiple layers to achieve the appearance of aged brass, matching other architectural details on the project.

 

Another key challenge was the installation, as the brewery is a well-recognised London landmark, with most of the buildings in the
RAM Quarter being listed. This called for specialist installation into stone, and other surfaces, and as part of our works we carried out the essential administration and negotiation of planning applications and consent on behalf of the client.

 

Additional care was taken when drilling to ensure we kept the building integrity and avoiding any damage to the wall surface.
Diamond drilling the surface and apply an anti-shock adhesion to the drilling point to avoid the stone blowing was the key remedy. 

 

Our installation procedure needed to clearly demonstrate our fixing methodology for approval by the Council’s Conservation Officer
in advance of the works. A detailed method & risk assessment was produced, following our site survey, with particular attention given
to the fixing method of each wall-fixed sign. As standard our drilling equipment (battery operated 110v) had vacuum drill heads to prevent any dust or debris being generated during the drill process.
